A 15-year-old Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) candidate is sitting her national examinations at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital as she recovers from childbirth.

The Grade Six pupil from Rangwe, Homa Bay County, was admitted to the hospital’s labour ward on Friday evening and delivered a baby boy through a Caesarean section on Sunday night, just hours before the national assessments began on Monday, October 26, 2026.

The examinations, which started at 8.30am on Monday, are scheduled to run for three days, ending on Wednesday, October 28.

According to hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Vincent Oduor, both the teenager and her newborn are in stable condition.

The teenager is among 40,821 candidates sitting the KPSEA examinations across Homa Bay County this year.

Dr Oduor said the newborn is being cared for by nurses in the hospital’s newborn unit as the mother continues sitting her examinations while recovering from the operation.
